TEMPE, Ariz. â€" Fueled by a nine run first inning the USD Softball team (2-2) knocked off Portland State 13-10 Sunday afternoon at the Kajikawa Classic at Arizona State. Olivia Sandusky and Taylor Spence each had three hits and Sandusky, Danielle Mavridis, and Lauren Kane hit home runs.
After giving up a run in the top of the first, USD sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first, collecting six hits and scoring nine, although just one run was earned. The inning was highlighted by a couple of home runs; a three-run bomb by senior Danielle Mavridis and a solo shot by Olivia Sandusky.
The Vikings responded with two runs in the top of the second, but USD answered back with two of their own in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff solo home run by freshman Lauren Kane and a RBI double by Lauren Berriatua. Kane has a team-high six RBI.
The Toreros would add a run in the third and sixth. In the third Sandusky and Tatum Schultz had back-to-back doubles and in the sixth Mavridis had a RBI single, her fourth of the night. Schultz is 9-for-15 to start the season with six extra base hits.
The Vikings would score four runs in the fourth and three in the fifth, but it was too little too late.
Berriatua, a JC transfer, earned her first win as a Torero, allowing six runs in 3.1 innings. Megan Sabbatini pitched 2.0 scoreless innings in relief.
The Toreros face the host No. 20/22 Arizona State Saturday evening.
