SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Senior Grace Hernandez had a no hitter through six innings and the USD softball team (4-4) went on to beat South Dakota 6-3 Saturday afternoon in the Campbell/Cartier Classic at San Diego State.
The Toreros got on the board with small ball in the top of the third. After Olivia Sandusky reached on an infield single to short, she immediately stole second base. Kailey Hill then knocked her in with a soft single to centerfield to give USD a 1-0 lead.
USD opened it up in the fifth inning, scoring five runs on five hits while sending nine batters to the plate. Danielle Mavridis led off with an infield single to third and was sacrificed to second by pinch hitter Hannah Gilliland. Mavridis scored on a Tatum Schultz single down the left field line, and then Schultz was brought home with a Sandusky single to center. After the next two Toreros reached base, USD had the bases loaded for Mary Grabowski who hit a foul ball deep down the right field line, which allowed all the runners to tag up and advance. Taylor Spence then put the finishing touches on the inning with a two RBI single, bringing the score to 6-0 USD.
Pinch hitter Jessica Rodgers broke up Hernandez's no-hitter with a leadoff single in the seventh inning. Two batters later Olivia Huffman hit a two-run home run down the left field line. The Coyotes would score one more run, and brought the tying run to the plate with two outs, but Mavridis made an incredible diving catch to end the game.
Hernandez (2-2) earned her second win, allowing three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts.
The Toreros wrap up the Campbell/Cartier Classic tomorrow with games against No. 22/25 California at 11:30 a.m. and San Diego State at approximately 2:00 p.m.
