NORTHRIDGE, Calif. â€" The USD Softball team (8-13) couldn't hold off a late rally by Grand Canyon and fell to the Antelopes 5-1 Saturday morning at the Matador Classic at CSUN. After playing five scoreless innings, the Toreros took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth, but GCU bounced back to score five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The teams combined for just three hits in the first four innings with USD's Megan Sabbatini and GCU's Bailey Bergman locked in a pitcher's duel.

With one out in the top of the sixth, senior SS Danielle Mavridis drew a walk and then advanced to second with Tatum Schultz reached on a error by the GBU 2B. After Taylor Spence hit in to a fielder's choice, Kailey Hill came through with a clutch two out RBI single to bring home Schultz and give USD a 1-0 lead.

All of the Antelopes' five sixth inning runs came with two outs. Sabbatini gave up a Camree Wartman triple and then a Laynee Gomez RBI single. After Sabbatini walked the next batter, Coach McElvain brought in Grace Hernandez, who also struggled, giving up three straight hits and allowing three more runs to score. McElvain then brought Sabbatini back in, who got the final out via strikeout.

The first two Torero batters singled in the seventh inning, but a double play thwarted their rally.

Sabbatini (4-7) struck out 11 batters, but was saddled with the loss.

The Toreros wrap up the Matador Classic Sunday with games against No. 24 Oregon State (10:00 a.m.) and CSUN (approx. 12:30 p.m.). The Toreros' game against CSUN will be streamed live on BigWest.tv.
