SANTA BARBARA, Calif. â€" The USD softball team (14-21) closed out the Gaucho Classic in Santa Barbara with two wins, knocking off CS Bakersfield 3-1 and beating UC Santa Barbara 4-2 in extra innings.
SAN DIEGO 3, CS BAKERSFIELD 1
The Roadrunners scored a run in the top of the first, but then USD scored three unanswered runs. Adrianna Cardoza hit a solo home run to left to give CS Bakerfield their only run.
The Toreros took the lead in the bottom of the second. With two outs and the bases loaded, Olivia Sandusky drilled a double to left center to bring home pinch runner Hannah Gilliland and Danielle Mavridis.
The Toreros added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Lauren Kane singled home Taylor Spence.
Megan Sabbatini (7-12) earned the win after allowing just one run and three hits in five innings. Grace Hernandez pitched the final two innings to pick up her second save of the season.
SAN DIEGO 4, UC SANTA BARBARA 2 (EIGHT INNINGS)
The Gauchos took an early lead, scoring on a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
They added another run in the fourth inning with a Sierra Altmeyer solo home run.
The Toreros rallied to tie it in the top of the sixth inning. Olivia Sandusky led off the inning with a solo home run to center. The tying run came on Tatum Schultz fielder's choice which brought home Taylor Spence.
In extra innings, playing under the international tiebreaker rules, the Toreros scored two runs. With Olivia Sandusky on second, Kailey Hill hit a RBI single to rightfield. Lauren Kane knocked in the final Torero run with a RBI single to left.
Grace Hernandez picked up the win, pitching 4.2 scoreless innings allowing just two hits.
The Toreros have next week off but then will start WCC play April 9 when they host Saint Mary's.
