SAN DIEGO, Calif, - The University of San Diego softball team (8-12) picked up Head Coach Melissa McElvain's 300th win in walk-off fashion on Tuesday with a thrilling 6-5 defeat of the University of Pittsburgh Panthers (15-5). This is McElvain's 15th season with the Toreros and her 300 wins rank first by a USD softball coach.
The Torero bats came alive late in clutch situations after producing just one hit, a Kailey Hill double, through the first three innings. Entering the bottom of the seventh down by one run Sarah Stone came through with a single down the left-field line. Tatum Schultz's sacrifice bunt attempt resulted in an error by Pitt catcher Shelby Picket putting runners on first and second. After a foul out by Taylor Spence the 3-for-3 Hill came to the plate looking to do more damage but the Panthers chose to intentionally walk the Torero slugger to load the bases.
Pitt pitcher Kayla Harris (6-5) struck out USD's Lauren Kane to put the Panthers just one out away from securing the victory. After falling behind in the count, Torero, Olivia Sandusky clawed her way back to a full count. Not wanting to walk in the game-tying run, Pitt's Harris, came across the plate where Sandusky delivered with a sharp drive into center field for a two-RBI single to win the game.
Hill finished the game with three of the Toreros eight hits and one RBI. Lauren Berriatua drove in the first USD run in the fourth inning when her double brought Sandusky home. Kane produced a two-run double in the fifth that scored Hill and Taylor Spence.
Megan Sabbatini (3-6) earned the win for the Toreros after three strong innings of relief. She faced nine batters and allowed one run while striking out two Panthers. Grace Hernandez started the game and settled in after a shaky second inning. Hernandez gave up three earned runs while striking out three.
USD will participate in the Cal State Northridge tournament starting this Friday with games against Toledo and Grand Canyon.
