SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego baseball team picked up a 9-4 win over Santa Clara University Friday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.
The Broncos (15-17, 2-7 WCC) got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to push across one run on one hit in the top of the first inning. The SCU run came on a TC Florentine RBI single up the middle, which scored Grant Meyland, who had walked, to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Toreros (19-18, 6-7 WCC) then responded in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs on two hits. Brhet Bewley got things started with a single up the middle. Jeff Houghtby then doubled down the left field line, which scored Bewley from first, to tie the game. After Houghtby stole second, he then came home on a wild pitch, to give USD a 2-1 lead.
After the Broncos scored two runs in the top of the sixth to regain the lead, USD answered right back in the bottom half of the inning, by scoring three runs on two hits. The Torero runs came on a Roman Garcia RBI single, and a two-run SCU error, to give USD a 5-3 lead.
San Diego then opened up the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, by scoring three runs on two hits. Houghtby got things started with a double to left field. Bryson Brigman was then hit by a pitch, and Houghtby stole third, then came home on an error by the catcher, while Brigman moved to third on the same play. Riley Adams then walked, Brigman scored on an error by the catcher, and Hunter Mercado-Hood hit a double to left center, which scored Adams, to give USD a 8-3 lead.
Both teams then traded a run in the eighth to out the game at its final of 9-4.
Offensively for the Toreros, Houghtby had a good day, as he went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Garcia also went 2-for-4, and had a triple and one RBI.
Sean Barry (2-2) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 0.2 innings of work. Nathan Kuchta picked up the save, as he allowed one run on two hits in 3.0 innings of work. Mitchell White (2-5) was saddled with the loss for the Broncos, as he allowed eight runs, six earned, on seven hits in 6.2 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they resume this West Coast Conference series with Santa Clara University at 6 p.m.
