SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" Behind a dominate pitching performance from senior right-hander Gary Cornish, the University of San Diego baseball team picked up a 7-1 win over Santa Clara University Saturday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 20-18 overall, have claimed this three game series with the Broncos, and improve to 7-7 in the WCC. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 15-18 overall and fall to 3-8 in the WCC.
Cornish (5-2) was dominate right from the get-go, as he retired his first 11 batters in order, before giving up a walk. Cornish took a no-hitter into the fifth, before the Broncos finally broke it up. Cornish finished the evening, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out 10 batters in 7.0 innings of work.
The Toreros got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across four runs on five hits in the bottom of the second inning. Hunter Mercado-Hood got things started with a single to right center. Brhet Bewley then homered to left field, to give USD its first two runs of the frame. Kevin Collard then kept things rolling with a single, and he moved to second on a Jay Schuyler single. Two batters later, Jeff Houghtby reached on an error by the third baseman, which allowed Collard to score from second. Bryson Brigman then capped the scoring for the frame with an RBI single to give USD a 4-0 lead.
USD went on to score one run in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings, while SCU scored one run in the sixth to put the game at its final of 7-1.
Offensively for the Toreros, Mercado-Hood led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with a RBI and one run scored.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday, as they conclude this West Coast Conference series with Santa Clara University at 1 p.m.
