FULLERTON, Calif. â€" The USD softball team (16-26, 2-4) fell at Cal State Fullerton (35-10) 8-2 Tuesday evening. The Toreros outhit the Titans 11-9, but Fullerton scored a run in each of the first four innings, opening up an insurmountable lead.
Fullerton's Samantha Vandiver led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and the next batter, Missy Taukeiaho, hit a two-run home run to left field.
The Titans scored two more in the second inning on a two-RBI single by Delynn Rippy.
Fullerton would tack on three more in the third, taking advantage of a pair of Torero errors, opening up a 7-0 lead.
The Toreros got on the board in the top of the fourth when Mary Grabowski led off the inning with a solo home run to left field. It was Grabowski's third home run of the year.
Fullerton scored another run in the fourth on back-to-back doubles.
The Toreros scored their second run in the sixth inning. Hannah Gilliland led off the inning with a pinch hit double to right center. After being moved up to third on a Taylor Spence bunt single, Gilliland scored on a Kailey Hill RBI fielder's choice.
The Toreros committed four errors, which tied a season-high. Grace Hernandez (5-10) allowed seven runs (four earned) in three innings. Lauren Berriatua pitched three innings in relief, allowing one run on just two hits.
The Toreros return to WCC play Saturday with a doubleheader at Pacific, beginning at noon.
