SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego baseball team (20-21, 7-9 WCC) dropped the series opener to the University of San Francisco, 13-3, Friday afternoon in a West Coast Conference at Benedetti Diamond.
The Dons (14-26, 8-8 WCC) got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to push across three runs on a Brady Bate three- run homer to left field in the first inning, which scored Allen Smoot, who had doubled, and Nico Giarratano, who had walked, to give the home team the early 3-0 lead.
USF then went on to score one run in the second, two runs in the fifth, and one more run in the sixth to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
San Diego then spoiled the shutout in the top of the seventh, scoring one run on a Kevin Collard solo home run, to move the score to 7-1.
The Dons then tacked on six runs in the eighth to take a 13-1 lead.
In the top of the ninth, USD would mange to score two runs on three hits. The USD runs came on Daniel Gardner RBI groundout, and a James Bonds run-scoring double, to put the game at its final of 13-3.
Offensively for the Toreros, Collard led the way, going 2-for-4 with a double, one home run, one RBI and one run score. Brhet Bewley also went 2-for-4, and he scored a pair of runs, while Roman Garcia went 2-for-4 as well.
Troy Conyers (4-5) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits in 5.0 innings of work. Anthony Shew (3-5) picked up the win for the Dons, as he allowed one run on five hits in 7.1 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they play game two of this series against the Dons at 1 p.m. inside of Benedetti Diamond.
