SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The USD softball team (14-23, 0-2) kicked off the WCC season with a pair of home losses to Saint Mary's on Saturday. The Torero offense couldn't find its groove, losing 4-1 and 4-0. USD wraps up the series Sunday at noon.
SAINT MARY'S 4, SAN DIEGO 1
Megan Sabbatini struggled in the first inning, hitting three batters to load the bases. Hailey Sparacino took advantage of the opportunity with a two-RBI single up the middle, just out of Tatum Schultz's reach, to give the Gaels an early 2-0 lead.
The Gaels led off the third inning with three hits; a double followed by two singles, which prompted Coach McElvain to pull Sabbatini and bring Grace Hernandez in. Hernandez entered the game with runners on second and third, but needed just three pitches to get out of the jam, keeping Saint Mary's lead to 3-0.
The Toreros got their first run in the bottom of fourth. Kailey Hill reached on an error to lead off the inning and then Shannon McKeon pinch ran for her. After Lauren Kane sacrificed McKeon to second, Mary Grabowski drove her in with a single to left, bringing the score to 3-1 SMC.
The Gaels added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a pair of singles.
The Toreros managed just three hits. Sabbatini (7-13) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs in 2.1 innings. Grace Hernandez pitched well in relief, allowing just one run in 4.2 innings.

In the first inning, with Gaels on second and third, Erica Musgrave hit a slow grounder up the middle. Ranging to her right, Tatum Schultz made a great play to throw out Musgrave and end the inning.
The Gaels' second baseman also made an impressive play to save a run in the bottom of the first. With Olivia Sandusky at second base, Lauren Kane hit a line drive to the right side, getting robbed by an Erica Musgrave diving catch.
The Gaels broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third. Katelyn Mamizuka hit a RBI double to right-center and then came in to score on an Andrea Hazel single to right, giving SMC a 2-0 lead.
SMC's Erica Musgrave led off the fourth inning with a double down the leftfield line. She would score on a Bailey Lotz RBI single. The Gaels loaded the bases with one out, but Grace Hernandez induced back-to-back groundouts to escape the jam and limit the damage.
Megan Sabbatini came in to pitch the final inning and gave up a solo home run to the first batter she faced, giving the Gaels a 4-0 lead.
Hernandez (5-9) took the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits in six innings.
