SANTA CLARA, Calif. â€" The USD softball team (21-27, 7-5) lost their first conference game since April 16 with a 5-3 loss in the series finale at Santa Clara Sunday afternoon. The Toreros held a 3-1 led in the fifth inning, but couldn't hold off the Broncos' bats for their second consecutive sweep.
The Toreros got their first run in the second when Olivia Sandusky earned a RBI, getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Santa Clara's Amanda Delfino led off the fourth with a double to the right center gap. Megan Sabbatini retired the next two batters, but Kelsie Barnard plated Delfino with a RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
The Toreros retook the lead in the fifth, scoring a pair of runs with two outs. Tatum Schultz brought Taylor Spence in with a RBI single and then Mary Grabowski doubled to score Schultz, giving USD a 3-1 lead.
The lead didn't last long; Santa Clara scored three runs in the bottom half of the fifth on a Delfino three run home run.
The Broncos added to their total in the sixth with a RBI double.
The Toreros tallied nine hits, but left ten runners on base. Megan Sabbatini (14-16) took the loss after allowing four runs in 4.2 innings. However, only one run was earned. Grace Hernandez pitched the final 1.1 innings.
The Toreros have next weekend off and then will wrap up their season when they host BYU (7-2), who swept Pacific this weekend to stay in first place.
