Seniors Honored as USD Splits DH with BYU

SAN DIEGO, Calif . -- The USD Softball team wrapped up their season by splitting a doubleheader against first place BYU. The Toreros won game one 5-2, before falling in the series finale 9-3. Senior Mary Grabowski went 4-for-5 on the day with two RBI; she along with seniors Sierra Berryessa, Grace Hernandez, Tatum Schultz, and Danielle Mavridis were honored before the game. This group amassed 101 wins in their four year career at USD.

SAN DIEGO 5, BYU 2

The Cougars led off the second with back-to-back singles, and then both runners were moved up with a BYU sacrifice bunt. Megan Sabbatini then induced an infield pop-up before striking out Coco Bond to get the final out.

The Toreros broke a 14 inning scoreless streak in the bottom of the third when they sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs. After the leadoff batter was retired, the next three Toreros singled to load the bases for Lauren Kane, who hit a RBI sacrifice fly to right field. Mary Grabowski then hit a two-RBI single to right, which was followed by a Kailey Hill double, which brought Grabowski in and gave USD a 4-0 lead.

The Cougars cut in to the Toreros' lead in the top of the fifth when Ashley Thompson hit a two-RBI double off the centerfield wall.

The Toreros scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Taylor Spence brought Sierra Berryessa home from second with a RBI single to left.

Megan Sabbatini (15-17) allowed two runs in 6.1 innings, striking out four and walking one. Grace Hernandez came in to get the final two outs to record her fourth save of the season.

BYU 9, SAN DIEGO 3

The Toreros got on the board first in the second game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second. Mary Grabowski led off the inning with a single to left; this extended her hitting streak to 14 games, a new USD record. After a pair of walks, USD had the bases loaded. The Toreros scored one on a Danielle Mavridis groundout, then two more on a Taylor Spence RBI single.

The Cougars responded in the next half inning with three runs, two of which were unearned. Coco Bond led off the inning with a double to deep center; she scored on a USD error. Lauren Bell then hit another double to score one more. The final BYU run of the inning came when Bell scored on a USD throwing error.

The Cougars took the lead in the top of the fourth with an RBI fielder's choice. Then they took an insurmountable lead in the top of the fifth when they scored five runs. Libby Sugg hit a RBI double to score Ashley Thompson from first. Two batters later, the Cougars scored on a RBI fielder's choice, prompting Coach Mac to bring in Lauren Berriatua. The Cougars would score two more on another USD error, their fourth of the game, before scoring their final run of the inning on a RBI single.

Freshman Gaby Grabowski threw the final inning for the Toreros, marking the first time sisters have made up the battery for USD.

In her final game, Grace Hernandez pitched 4.1 innings. Lauren Berriatua also pitched, tossing 1.2 innings of shutout ball.
