STOCKTON, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego baseball team dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 loss the University of the Pacific Saturday afternoon in the first game of a West Coast Conference double header.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 23-27 overall, and move to 10-12 in the WCC. With the win, the Tigers improve to 20-26 overall and 11-11 in the WCC.
After USD scored one run in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead, the Tigers managed to score one run in the bottom of the eight to tie things up, then with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Danny Mayer hit an RBI single to right field, giving the Tigers the come-from-behind win.
The Toreros got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to push across one run in the top of the first inning. Back-to-back singles by Daniel Gardner and Bryson Brigman set the table for the Toreros. Two batters later, Riley Adams doubled to right field, to score Gardner from second, and give USD a 1-0 lead.
San Diego then doubled its lead in the top of the second inning, as Hunter Mercado-Hood led off the frame reaching on an error by the home team. Jay Schuyler then reached on another Tiger error, which moved Mercado-Hood to second. After a Jeff Houghtby sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base, Gardner grounded out to the first baseman, which allowed Mercado-Hood to score, moving the score to 2-0.
The Tigers then scored one run in the fifth on a McKay Koissian RBI ground out, and they evened the score in the bottom of the sixth on a Danny Mayer solo home run, moving the score to 2-2.
San Diego then responded in the top of the seventh inning, scoring one run on two hits. The USD run came on Adams sacrifice fly to left field, which scored Gardner, who had doubled, to give USD back the lead at 3-2.
Offensively for the Toreros, Gardner led the way, as he went 2-for-5 with one double and one RBI. Brigman also had a good day, as he went 2-for-5 as well. CJ Burdick (0-1) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of work. Pacific's Vince Arobio (2-1) picked up the win, as he allowed no runs on n hits in 1.1 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday evening, as they conclude this double-header with the Tigers.
