HILLSBORO, Ore. â€" The University of San Diego baseball team (23-25) dropped a 5-2 decision to the University of Oregon (21-17), Monday afternoon in a non-conference game.
The Ducks got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to score one run on no hits in the bottom of the first inning. The Oregon run came when Jacob Bennett reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Austin Grebeck, who was hit by a pitch, to score from third.
After the Ducks scored three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, USD finally broke through on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth. Jeff Houghtby led off the frame with a walk. Hunter Mercado-Hood then doubled to left field, which scored Houghtby from first. Three batters later, Brhet Bewley hit an RBI single through the left side, to score Mercado-Hood from second, moving the score to 4-2.
Oregon then scored one run in the bottom of the eighth to put the game at its final of 5-2.
Offensively for the Toreros, Bewley led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Jacob Hill (0-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on no hits in 0.0 innings of work. Cole Stringer (2-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Ducks, as he allowed two runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings of work. Stephen Nogosek picked up his 11th save of the season, as he allowed no runs two hits in 1.1 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday May 10, as they remain on the road, and head over to UC Irvine for a 6:30 p.m. non-conference game at Anteater Ballpark.
