Aug. 29, 2016 SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of San Diego women's volleyball team has jumped into the AVCA top-25 poll this week, checking in at No. 18, after posting a 1-1 record in the opening weekend of play.
USD opened the season with a split at the Stanford Invitational this past weekend. On Friday night, the Toreros overcame a 0-2 deficit to stun the host Cardinal, 3-2, and claim the program's first ever win over Stanford. The win was also marked the first time since the 2008 season, that Stanford dropped a season-opener. In this match, sophomore outside hitter Lauren Fuller led the USD offense with a career-high 20 kills, and she recorded a double-double with 10 digs, while also hitting for a .271 clip. Jayden Kennedy was the only other Torero in double digit kills with 13. Kristen Gengenbacher also recorded a double-double with 23 assists, and 16 digs, while Hunter Jennings managed to record 12 digs. As a team, USD hit for a .228 clip, while Stanford hit .220. The Toreros had 66 digs, to Stanford 53, while the Cardinal had 20 total blocks, to USD's 14.
Then on Saturday, USD could not overcome a 0-2 deficit to the No. 3 ranked Minnesota, as the Golden Gophers were able to fend off a feisty USD squad and claimed a 3-1 win. In this match, freshman outside hitter Thana Fayad led the USD offense with 16 kills on 35 swings to hit for a .286 clip. Kaity Edwards was the second of four Toreros in double-digit kills, as she had 14, and hit for a .667 clip, while Lauren Fuller recorded 12 kills, and Lauren Schad added in 10 kills. Gengenbacher recorded a double-double with 45 assists and 19 digs, while Hunter Jennings had 16 digs, and Lizzy Tardieu added in 15 digs. As a team, USD hit for a .227 clip, while Minnesota hit .314. The Toreros had 70 digs, to Minnesota's 61, while the Golden Gophers had 15.5 total blocks, to USD's three.
USD will return to action on Friday, as they travel to the Wisconsin Tournament. On Friday, USD will square off against the host and No. 2 ranked Wisconsin Badgers at 5 p.m.
