SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The USD women's soccer team (2-2-1) played CSUN (3-1-2) to a 0-0 draw Sunday evening at Torero Stadium to record their second consecutive shutout. The Toreros already have three shutouts in their five matches so far this season.
"I felt like we had some good moments but we didn't consistently see how to break them down," Head Coach Ada Greenwood said after the match. "I felt like we had chances to win the game, but so did they, so a tie is probably a fair result."
It was an incredibly evenly-matched contest throughout. Both teams had opportunities to score, but neither squad was able to execute and the teams combined for just three shots on goal.
"We didn't have that quality we needed in the final third. We had some high percentage opportunities that I felt we didn't get the most out of," Greenwood said.
The Toreros finished with 12 shots to CSUN's nine and USD held the advantage in corner kicks as well (7-4).
USD had two shots on goals; one in the 14th minute and another in the final minutes of the second period of extra time. In the 14th minute, Rachel Connors had the ball inside the box on the left side causing the CSUN goalkeeper to come out and attack the ball with a sliding save.
Late in the second extra time period, following a Julia Sherwood corner, the ball died inside a crowded box. Caitlyn Kretzschmar attacked the ball, but her shot was blocked by the CSUN keeper.
"I thought Jackie [Altschuld] and [Caitlyn] Kretzschmar played really well. They were very consistent and did a really good job," Greenwood remarked.
The Matadors' Kourtney Kutscher had back-to-back looks in the 52nd minute. Her first shot was off the cross bar and about 30 seconds later she had a header off a cross that went wide.
For the Toreros' redshirt freshman goalkeeper Amber Michel, it was her second consecutive shutout and third of her young career.
The Toreros will be back on the pitch Thursday evening when they host DePaul at 7:00 p.m.
