TEMPE, Ariz. â€" The USD Softball team (0-2) fell to Arizona State 6-3 Friday evening in their second game of the Kajikawa Classic. The Toreros held a 2-2 tie after three innings, but couldn't recover after ASU, who is receiving votes in both national polls, scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The Sun Devils scored in the first inning on a sac fly, but USD tied the game in the top of the second with a Kailey Hill solo home run to left.
Freshman 3B Lindsay Clare led of the third with her first collegiate hit, an infield single. She came around to score on a Hannah Gilliland double, her fourth RBI of the day, which gave USD a 2-1 lead.
The Sun Devils tied the game at 2-2 with a Marisa Stankiewicz RBI single in the bottom of the third.
ASU took the lead with four fourth inning runs. With runners on second and third, Sashel Palacios hit a two-run double to left. The Sun Devils would score two more on a pair of RBI singles.
The Toreros cut into their deficit in the fifth inning. Freshman C Madison Casiano led off the inning with a triple down the right field line; she would come around to score on an ASU fielding error.
Six of the next seven Toreros were retired to give them their second loss of the day.
Hannah Gilliland led the way for the Toreros, going 2-for-3 with a RBI double. She finished the day with three hits and four RBI.
Megan Sabbatini (0-2) suffered her second loss of the day after giving up six runs in 3.2 innings. She recorded five strikeouts.
The Toreros continue play in the Kajikawa Classic Saturday against No. 24 Fresno State at 2:00 p.m. PT Saturday.
