SAN DIEGO - The USD softball team (10-12) earned a split in today's non-conference doubleheader with visiting CS Bakersfield (4-15).
In game one Lindsay Clare's RBI single in the bottom of the 7th broke a 5-5 tie to give the Toreros their 10th win of the season. Clare went 2-for-4 at the plate and was joined by three teammates with two hits each - Taylor Spence, Sara Silveyra and Frankie Perales. Olivia Sandusky was 1-for-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. Delaney Heller improved to 4-1 as she pitched the final 6.2 innings, scattering 2 hits and giving up just one unearned run.
The visiting Road Runners jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, but the Toreros answered with three of their own runs. Olivia Sandusky collected the key hit with a double to center field that knocked in two runs. Sara Silveyra hit a single to center that scored Sandusky from third.
The Toreros knotted the score at 4-all in the 2nd inning, only to see the Road Runners take a 5-4 lead in the top of the 4th. Madison Casiano singled to right in the bottom of the 5th that knocked in Sandusky to tie it up at 5-all. After a scoreless 6th, that set the stage for Clare's big hit.
In the second game, CSUB's Summer Evans scattered 7 hits over 7.0 innings as the Road Runners blanked the Toreros 8-0. Leadoff hitter Taylor Spence was the lone Toreros to get 2 hits. CSU-Bakersfield was paced by Jose Flores (2-for-2, 1 run) and Julea Cavazos (2-for-3, 2 runs). Five different Road Runners had 1 RBI.
The 3-game series wraps up Sunday with first pitch set for 11 a.m. at the USD Softball Complex.
