SANTA BARBARA, Calif. â€" The USD softball team (12-13) lost to Seattle University 3-2 in the first game of the Gaucho Classic II Friday morning. The Redhawks broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh. Lauren Kane and Olivia Sandusky provided the offense for USD, each hitting solo home runs.
The Toreros grabbed a one run lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Lauren Kane solo home run to center field, her third on the season.
Seattle tied the game at 1-1 in the next inning. The Redhawks loaded the bases and scored an unearned run after a Torero error.
The game entered the seventh inning deadlocked in a 1-1 tie, but the Redhawks scored two runs to take a 3-1 lead. With the bases loaded, Kaylee Ree grounded in to a RBI fielder's choice and then Madison Cathcart hit a RBI double.
Olivia Sandusky made things interesting with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, but that was all the Toreros could muster. It was her fourth homer on the year, which ties her with Kailey Hill for the team-lead.
Seattle outhit the Toreros 10-5, but Torero pitchers forced the Redhawks to leave eight runners on base.
Megan Sabbatini pitched 5.1 innings and didn't allow an earned run, while striking out six. Lauren Berriatua gave up the two go-ahead runs in her 1.2 innings.
The Toreros continue the Gaucho Classic II with a 3:00 p.m. game against the host school, UC Santa Barbara.
