SANTA CLARA, Calif. â€" The No. 23 USD baseball team (15-5, 5-0) won their second game of the day at Santa Clara, knocking off the Broncos 11-1. Colton Waltner and Roman Garcia each had three RBI and Chris Murphy pitched seven shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out 10 batters.
Just as the Toreros did in the first game, they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jeff Houghtby led off the game with a walk and was brought home by a Colton Waltner RBI single. Hunter Mercado-Hood continued his incredible day with a RBI double to left field.
The Toreros added a run in the second on a Houghtby RBI single to right field, which brought home Chris McCready.
USD scored four runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning. Paul Kunst led off the inning with a double and was brought home by a Waltner RBI single. Mercado-Hood collected his seventh RBI of the evening with a double to right. Three batters later, Jay Schuyler hit a two-run double to bring the score to 7-0.
The Toreros continued their offensive barrage in the following inning scoring three two-out runs. McCready began the inning with a double and came around to score on a Waltner RBI double, his third RBI of the evening. After back-to-back walks, Roman Garcia hit a two-run single to center field, giving USD a comfortable 10-0 lead.
Roman Garcia tallied another RBI with a single in the eighth inning.
The Broncos broke up the shutout on a RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the ninth.
USD goes for their second WCC series sweep of the year tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
