Toreros split DH, win series at Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. -- The USD softball team (18-17, 4-2) won their second WCC series of the year after splitting their doubleheader at Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon. After being shutout 3-0 in game one, the Toreros bounced back with a 6-4 win in the series finale.

SAINT MARY'S 3, SAN DIEGO 0

The Gaels scored all three of their runs in the third inning. Cara DiMercurio led off with a double to center and would score on a Nikki Alexander single to left. Two batters later Hailey Sparacino hit a two-run double to center to give the Gaels a 3-0 lead.

The Toreros put a runner on third in both the second and third innings, but failed to bring them in. Megan Sabbatini (8-9) took the loss for the Toreros, giving up three runs in 2.2 innings. Lauren Berriatua pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing just two hits and no runs.

Saint Mary's Katlyn Whitt tossed a complete game shutout. She only gave up three hits and had zero walks.

SAN DIEGO 6, SAINT MARY'S 4

The Gaels took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a Hailey Sparacino double to center. Saint Mary's added two runs in the bottom of the second when Nikki Alexander hit a two-run double to center.

The Toreros exploded for six runs in the top of the third. Lauren Kane got the scoring going with a bases loaded walk. Kailey Hill and Madison Casiano followed with back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game. Saint Mary's starter Katie Moss then had another bases loaded walk, which caused her to get pulled for Katlyn Whitt. The Toreros would score two more in the inning; one on a Sarah Stone RBI fielder's choice and another on a Lauren Berriatua RBI sacrifice fly, putting USD up 6-3.

The Gaels cut into the Toreros' lead in the bottom of the third with an Eryn McCoy RBI single to center, bringing the score to 6-4.

Delaney Heller got the start, but struggled and was pulled after giving up three runs (two earned) in 1.1 innings. Lauren Berriatua pitched the next 5.1 innings and gave up just one unearned run on her way to her sixth win of the year. Megan Sabbatini finished the game, picking up a one-out save via strikeouts.

The Toreros return home next weekend, hosting Santa Clara for a three game series beginning Saturday at noon.
