USD vs SCU Boxscore April 23

SAN DIEGO -- The USD Toreros softball team, playing their final regular-season home contest, dropped a 7-3 decision to visiting Santa Clara. Despite the loss, with yesterday's doubleheader sweep, the Toreros have now won three straight WCC series. San Diego (20-18, 6-3 WCC) travels to first place BYU (32-10, 6-0 WCC) next weekend for a key league series.

It was Senior Day at the USD Softball Complex and all five Torero seniors were honored in a pre-game ceremony. With all five seniors in the starting lineup, the Toreros jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Senior Olivia Sandusky provided the key hit with a 2-run triple that scored Taylor Spence and Sara Silveyra.

Senior RHP Megan Sabbatini, who pitched back-to-back complete games on Saturday against the Broncos, shutout the visitor's through three innings. However, the Broncos offense got untracked in the 4th inning when they knotted the score at 3-all. Morgan Modesto tallied a RBI double against Sabbatini, and then with two outs and runners on second and third, Lauren Berriatua replaced Sabbatini. Kelsie Barnard greeted Berriatua with a 2-run double before getting Amanda Delfino to fly out to center to end the inning.

The Broncos added an unearned run in the 6th to take a 4-3 lead, and then in the top of the 7th, Modesto blasted a 3-run homer to left field off of Sabbatini , who had re-entered the game with one out in the inning. In the first inning, SCU's Ciara Gonzales replaced Bronco starter Kim Aubree following Sandusky's 2-run triple, and would close out the game giving up just 3 hits the rest of the way.

Sandusky was joined by teammate Lauren Kane who also collected two hits on the day. Lauren Berriatua, who gave up just one run in 1.2 innings of work, took the loss to fall to 6-5 on the season. For Santa Clara, Modesto finished 3-for-4 at the plate with 2 runs and 4 RBI.
