SAN DIEGO -- The USD baseball team dropped a 9-5 decision to the host San Diego State Aztecs this evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The host Aztecs earned the season sweep with two wins this year in the crosstown matchup.
San Diego State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off of Torero starter CJ Burdick. Tyler Adkison's sacrifice fly knocked in a run and Andrew Martinez shot an RBI single to left that scored Danny Sheehan. The Toreros answered with two runs in the top of the second. Aidan Stinnett knocked in Colton Waltner with an RBI single, and then scored when Jeff Houghtby added his own RBI single.
The Toreros would take a 3-2 lead in the third. Jay Schuyler followed his first inning double with a single up the middle. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored on Roman Garcia's RBI single to center. It was Garcia's team-leading 50th RBI of the season.
The Aztecs (37-16) took control of the game in the bottom of the third with five runs on just two hits. The hits were big blows with Andrew Martinez delivering a 3-run homer to left, and then he was followed by Dean Nevarez with a towering solo shot to left field. USD would threaten in the 8th with runners on second and third with two outs, but reliever Alan Trejo would get Jeff Houghtby to pop up to short. State would add two insurance runs in the 8th to jump ahead 9-3.
In the ninth Paul Kuntz opened with a single off of closer CJ Saylor. Hunter Mercado-Hood then hit a deep double to center that scored Kuntz from first base. Jay Schuyler followed with a single, his third hit of the game, to put runners at first and third. With one out, Garcia would blast a double to center that plated Mercado-Hood and moved Schuyler to third to make it 9-5. Colton Waltner just missed with a potential 2-run extra base hit down the left field line, but the ball landed just foul in front of the fence. He would then reach base via a walk to load the bases with one out. Saylor would then strike out the side by getting Kevin Collard and Aidan Stinnett swinging to end the game.
The Toreros were paced by Jay Schuyler who went 3-for-5 at the plate. He extended his on-base streak to 36 straight games. USD outhit the Aztecs 13-10, but ended up stranding 11 runners. Collecting two hits were Garcia (2-5, 2 RBIs), Waltner (2-3, 1 run) and Kunst (2-4, 1 run). Carl Burdick took the loss for the Toreros to fall to 2-3 on the year. State was paced by Martinez who finished 2-for-4 with 1 run and 4 RBIs. Jorge Martinez pitched 3.1 innings in relief, giving up just one hit to improve to 2-1 on the year.
The Toreros (32-18-1) return to Fowler Park this Friday to begin a key three-game WCC series with Pepperdine. USD is tied with Saint Mary's and needs to win one more game than the Gaels over the weekend to advance to the WCC Tournament with BYU, Loyola Marymount and Gonzaga.
