SALT LAKE CITY, Utah â€" The No. 15 USD volleyball team (5-3) swept Missouri 3-0 Saturday morning in the Toreros' second match of the Utah Volleyball Classic. The Toreros had a balanced offensive attack with five players recording at least five kills on their way to a 25-23, 25-17, 25-16 win.
Jayden Kennedy once again led the Toreros in kills. She had ten on a .450 hitting percentage. Addie Picha tied a career-high with eight kills while hitting .500. Roxie Wiblin (six), Lauren Fuller (six) and Kaity Edwards (five) also helped the Toreros earn their fifth sweep of the season.
Lizzy Tardieu led the team with 14 digs while Payton Douglass had a career-high with 10 digs. Kristen Gengenbacher had 35 of the team's 39 assists.
As a team, the Toreros hit .302 and held the Tigers to a .124 hitting percentage. USD had 12 blocks to Missouri's five with Picha providing seven while Kennedy had six.
The Toreros showed some grit in the first set. They trailed 22-19 and then rallied to finish the set on a 6-1 run. The second set was tight early on and was tied at 13-13, but the Toreros finished strong, outscoring the Tigers 12-4 down the stretch. USD never trailed in the third and final set and built their lead to as big as ten points (20-10).
Alyssa Munlyn led the Tigers with 11 kills on a .421 hitting percentage. Courtney Eckenrode had 28 assists and Kira Larson had a team-high nine digs.
The Toreros wrap up the Utah Volleyball Classic Saturday afternoon when they face the Green Bay Phoenix at 4:00 p.m. PT
