Quality Shooting Not Enough Against LMU

SAN DIEGO - San Diego shot 47.7 percent from the field but could not slow down a hot 3-point shooting Loyola Marymount team as the Toreros fell, 67-53, Saturday afternoon.

Maya Hood and Aubrey Ward-El led the Toreros (12-9, 5-5 WCC) with 10 points apiece. Hood led USD with six rebounds, while Ward-El contributed a team-high three assists.

Despite the overall strong shooting, the Toreros struggled from 3-point range, converting just one of 10 attempts.

The Lions (14-7, 6-4 WCC) were led by Makenzie Cast with 15 points. Cast led a strong day of 3-point shooting, going 3 for 4 from behind the arc. LMU went 6 for 12 (50 percent) from 3-point range overall and hit 15 of its 16 free throws.

USD was hampered by turnovers, committing 26 which led to 19 points for the Lions. LMU also got significant minutes from its second unit as its bench accounted for 32 of its 67 points.

LMU jumped out to a quick lead early in the first quarter but a 10-2 run, capped by a layup by Hood, gave the Toreros a 14-11 lead with 3:40 to play. The Lions found their rhythm at the end of the quarter and retook the lead, 15-14.

The Toreros defense took over in the second quarter and held LMU to 0 for 11 shooting for a five minute stretch in the middle of the period. Despite the excellent defense, USD was unable to capitalize offensively and faced a 29-28 deficit at halftime.

The third quarter belonged to the Lions, which outscored USD, 21-14, to extend its lead to, 50-42.

Turnovers plagued the Toreros in the fourth quarter which included a stretch of five turnovers in a span of 6:08 minutes. LMU held USD to four points over the final 5:45 minutes of the game to secure the decision.

The Toreros will look to get back on track next Thursday at 6 p.m. PT when they play host to Gonzaga. USD will be celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day at the game, which will include a pregame event with FIFA Women's World Cup winner and Olympian, Julie Foudy.
