San Diego sweeps Pepperdine in nationally broadcasted victory

SAN DIEGO – A team-high 11 kills by Megan Jacobsen propelled San Diego to a, 3-0, sweep of Pepperdine on Thursday evening in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

It was the third straight sweep for the Toreros (10-9, 7-2 WCC) who took control of second place in the conference standings at the midway point of the WCC season.

USD made quick work of the Waves (13-6, 7-2 WCC) in front of a national audience on ESPNU and a rowdy Bull Pit student section by winning 25-19, 25-21, 25-15.

Jacobsen played a major role in that effort, hitting .688 on the night and racking up 11 kills – just two shy of her career high.

Cami May hit double-digits in kills for the second consecutive match, contributing 10 on the night. Roxie Wiblin and Katie Lukes had eight kills apiece on the night and hit .412 and .467, respectively.

Addie Picha and Wiblin paced the Toreros at the net, recording three blocks apiece. Picha broke the 100-mark with her first denial of the match and now has 102 blocks on the season.

Kellie Barry and Annie Benbow chipped in double-digit digs with 13 and 10, respectively.

The teams traded blows throughout the first set with multiple lead changes early. With the Toreros leading, 17-16, USD created separation with a 4-0 run to go up, 21-16. Six different Toreros registered at least one kill in the set and Hannah Patrick put the finishing touches on the set with a kill to put USD up, 1-0.

Neither team led by more than three points in the second set until the Toreros took a 24-20 lead before securing a 25-21 decision. Lukes and May took the lead on offense during the set, registering five and four kills, respectively.

It was all Toreros in the third set. With the match tied, 10-10, USD went on a 6-1 rally to take a commanding 16-11 lead. The Toreros closed the set on another 6-1 run to seal the 25-15 result and the 3-0 victory.

The Toreros will look to extend its three-match winning streak on Saturday at noon PT when it plays host to Loyola Marymount.
