Tyler Williams did not fall and San Diego's upset bid at Washington came up just short as the Toreros fell Monday night, 66-63.
Â
• USD (2-1) gave the Huskies (2-1) all they could handle and held a one-point lead with less than four minutes to play.
Â
• Washington outscored the Toreros 7-3 over the final 3:08 to escape with the win. Williams got a decent look at a 3-pointer from the right sideline on the final play of the game but the semi-contested effort hit the front of the rim and bounced out.
Â
• The result spoiled an otherwise impressive night by the Toreros, which shot 47.2 percent and held the Huskies to 41 percent from the field and 26 percent from 3-point range. USD led for a longer amount of time throughout the contest at 18:35 to Washington's 17:46.
Â
• USD hurt its own cause with 18 turnovers which led to 19 points for Washington. The Huskies produced 10 steals as a team.
Â
•
Olin Carter III celebrated his 22nd birthday with a team-high 17 points.
Isaiah Pineiro (14),
Yauhen Massalski (12) and
Alex Floresca (10) each hit double-digits in points. Williams had a career-high nine assists and Massalski recorded the first double-double of his career with 11 rebounds to go along with 12 points.
Â
• Floresca was excellent off the bench and helped provide a physical presence inside for the Toreros which scored 28 of their points in the paint.
Â
• Pineiro led USD in scoring in each of the first two games and played well against the Huskies but was limited to 29 minutes due to early foul trouble in the first half.
