Four Toreros Earn All-WCC Honors

Berry, Lander, Benjamin and Wiher named to all-conference teams

SAN DIEGO – Junior forward Miguel Berry was one of four Toreros that received All-WCC honors, earning first team recognition, as announced by the conference on Tuesday. 
 
In addition to Berry, the conference recognized defenders Henry Lander (second team) and Josiah Benjamin (honorable mention) and goalkeeper Matt Wiher was named to the All-WCC freshman team.
 
Berry started all 19 matches for San Diego in the 2018 season and was responsible for fifty percent of the Toreros' offense. Berry finished the season with eight goals, tying his career high (2016), two assists and a career-high 18 points. He went 2-for-3 in penalty kicks and had four game-winning goals.
 
Berry was among the top offensive threats in the conference, ranking second in shots (59) and shots per game (3.11). He also ended the season ranked in game winners (third), goals (fourth) and points (sixth).
 
A junior defender, Lander started 14 matches for the Toreros. Lander was a staple of a San Diego back line that held opponents to a 1.18 goals-against average and propelled the Toreros to five shutouts. 
 
Lander also scored the game-winner for the Toreros in the 86th minute of their 2-1 victory over Pacific on Oct. 28. It was his first goal of the season. 
 
Benjamin, also contributed to San Diego's defensive success. The senior started in 13 matches for the Toreros and helped the team rank second in the conference in goals allowed (1.00) and goals-against average (0.91). 
 
Freshman Wiher, had an outstanding first season in goal for USD, finishing with 65 saves and four shutouts. He ranked second in the conference in goals-against average (0.85) and save percentage (0.823) and third in saves (65) and shutouts (4).
 
Wiher set a career-high with eight saves in San Diego's 1-0 victory over CSUN on Sept. 23, and then tied that twice with eight saves against San Francisco (Oct. 7) and Saint Mary's (Oct. 26).
 
Wiher also finished the season ranked in the top 50 nationally in save percentage (15th) and goals-against average (38th).
