SAN DIEGO - A seven-run seventh inning propelled San Diego to its first victory of the season, defeating California 11-8 on Saturday afternoon at Fowler Park.

Trailing 6-4, Jay Schuyler got the Toreros (1-1) going in the seventh with an RBI-double down the right-field line that brought in two runs. Shane McGuire and Jeff Houghtby contributed RBI-singles in the inning.

Adam Kerner was hit by a pitch to bring in a run, while Tora Otsuka drew a walk to bring in another. Brhet Bewley put the ball in play and brought in the Toreros seventh run of the inning on a fielder's choice.

The win salvaged a split in the weekend series with the Bears (1-1) after the Toreros dropped the season-opener Friday night, 6-1.

USD had a balanced offensive performance with six players registering two hits apiece, including each of the Toreros first five batters. Seven Toreros recorded one RBI each, while eight players scored at least one run.

Paul Kunst and Schulyer produced the only extra-base hits for the Toreros - both doubles.

Chris Murphy got the start for the Toreros and permitted five runs on six hits and four walks with nine strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Gabriel Ponce came in as relief in the sixth inning and picked up the win, tossing 2.0 innings and holding the Bears to one unearned run on four hits one walk with three strikeouts.

Justin Friedman sealed the victory with a strong final two innings. Cal got to him for a pair of runs in the eighth but he shut the door the rest of the way to secure the win.

The Toreros continue play Sunday with a doubleheader against Cincinnati at 1 p.m. PT.
