TEMPE, Ariz. - San Diego dropped a pair of games Sunday to Texas State and Arizona State on the final day of the Littlewood Classic.
The Toreros (6-5) fell to the Bobcats, 2-1, and dropped a, 7-0, result against No. 18/19 Arizona State.
USD opened the day against Texas State and lost its second one-run game in as many days.
Halle Kyler (3-2) turned in another strong performance in the circle, limiting the Cougars to two runs on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts in a complete-game performance. Kyler has thrown a complete game in each of her four starts this season.
Shelbi Evans led the Toreros offensively, logging two of the Toreros four hits on the game. Katie Vretzos contributed the Toreros only RBI of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Texas State's Tara Oltmann delivered the deciding hit in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI-triple to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.
A strong relief effort by Delaney Heller was not enough for the Toreros to take down the Sun Devils.
ASU scored seven runs in the first two innings to take a 7-0 lead before Heller took over. Heller pitched the final 4 1/3 innings and held the Sun Devils scoreless, permitting just four hits and no walks with four strikeouts.
Hannah Gilliland, Sara Silveyra and Lauren Kane contributed a hit apiece. Overall, the Toreros had trouble figuring out ASU pitcher Giselle Juarez who allowed just three hits and one walk with nine strikeouts in a complete game.
USD will look to get back on track Thursday when it travels to Fullerton at 5 p.m. PT. The Toreros travel to the Gaucho Classic next weekend for games against Dayton and UC Santa Barbara.
