SPOKANE, Wash. - Caroline Buhr scored a team-high 13 points and San Diego trailed by one point with less than a minute to play but could not complete the upset at Gonzaga as the Toreros fell, 58-54, Thursday night.
The Toreros (15-13, 8-9 WCC) outscored the Bulldogs (23-5, 16-1 WCC) 16-12 in the fourth quarter but its comeback bid came up short.
USD's defense was excellent and held Gonzaga to 36 percent shooting from the field, including a 6-for-22 clip (27 percent) from three-point range.
The Toreros dominated the paint, outscoring the Bulldogs, 28-16. It was a team effort offensively for USD which had nine players register at least one point. Along with Buhr's 13 points, Maya Hood chipped in 11 while Aubrey Ward-El and Sydney Williams added eight apiece.
Despite the balanced offense, the Toreros were held to 35 percent shooting from the field and 25 percent from behind the arc.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 10-9 lead in the first quarter and outscored the Toreros, 18-13, in the second quarter to extend its lead to 28-22 at halftime.
Despite the early deficit, USD kept the game within reach through the third quarter. The Bulldogs increased its lead to, 49-38, early in the fourth quarter and held a 10-point lead with 4:56 to play.
However, the Toreros went on an 11-2 run to cut Gonzaga's lead to, 55-54, with 58 seconds remaining in regulation. Stockton provided the final blow by the Bulldogs with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession.
The Toreros got a pair of looks from behind the arc by Myah Pace and Ward-El but neither could convert and the Bulldogs sealed the 58-54 decision.
USD will look to rebound Saturday at 2 p.m. PT when it plays host to San Francisco it its final regular-season home game. The Toreros will honor its five seniors during a pregame ceremony.
