SAN DIEGO - Myah Pace recorded a double-double but San Diego was unable to overcome a cold day of shooting as the Toreros fell to San Francisco, 49-47, Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
It was a tough finish to the regular season for USD (15-14, 8-10 WCC) which celebrated its five seniors - Aubrey Ward-El, Maya Hood, Jamie Kissinger, Sydney Williams and Alex Young - during a pregame ceremony.
The Dons (15-14, 10-8 WCC) held USD to 30 percent shooting from the field on the game and the Toreros went 0-for-14 from three-point range.
The Toreros kept the game within five points for a majority of the game despite the poor shooting. USD was strong on the offensive glass, grabbing 18 offensive rebounds and converting 12 second-chance points. USD limited the Dons to 39 percent shooting on the day.
Pace registered 11 points with 10 rebounds and three assists. Nine of her 11 points came in the first half. Maya Hood added a team-high 12 points.
USD had its chances down the stretch but could not overtake the Dons late. A layup by Williams with 2:12 to play made it a one-possession game.
Down by three with 33 seconds to play, Ward-El got a decent look from behind the arc but the shot clanked off the back iron. The Toreros grabbed the rebound and Pace drove to the basket for a layup with five seconds on the clock to pull USD to within one, 48-47.
The Toreros nearly got a steal on the ensuing in-bound pass but USF recovered and forced a Torero foul with one second remaining. The Dons hit the first free throw and missed the second but USD could not get a half-court shot off quick enough and the buzzer sounded to seal the 49-47 decision for USF.
San Diego will look to regroup as postseason play begins at the WCC Tournament in Las Vegas next week.
