SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Shannon McKeon delivered an RBI-single in the top of the eighth inning to lead San Diego to a 3-2 victory against UC Santa Barbara on Sunday morning.
Down 2-1 in the seventh inning, the Toreros (9-8) loaded the bases with two outs and McKeon scored the tying run on a wild pitch to send the game to extra innings. After Lauren Kane advanced to third base in the eighth inning, McKeon stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI-single to left field to put USD up, 3-2.
Delaney Heller (2-3) retired the Gauchos (7-8) in order in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory.
It was the second consecutive game the Toreros went to extra innings against the Gauchos. UCSB got the best of USD in the first game on Saturday but the Toreros were able to bounce back Sunday and end the weekend with a win.
Katie Vretzos and Savannah Shields had quality days at the plate, both going 2-for-3 with a run apiece. Kailey Hill went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Halle Kyler got the start in the circle and held the Gauchos to two runs on six hits and no walk with two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Heller entered the circle in the fourth inning and finished the game, not allowing a run on four hits and two walks with a strikeout in 4 2/3 innings.
The Toreros finished the Gaucho Classic with a 3-2 record. USD returns home next weekend to co-host he San Diego Classic with San Diego State. The Toreros will take on Long Beach State, Colorado State, UCLA, Oregon State and CSUN.
