SAN DIEGO â€" The USD baseball team completed one of its best weeks in program history with a perfect 5-0 record and 4-0 mark in the Tony Gwynn Legacy. USD capped off the week today by defeating No. 4 Arkansas 7-6, and then closing it out with a 5-3 win over Arizona.
In today's second game against the Arizona Cats (4-3), USD scored three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh. The five runs held up as Arizona was only able to plate single runs in the 5th, 8th and 9th innings. Nigel Ward got the win on the mound for the Toreros in relief as he pitched two innings (5th & 6th), scattering two hits and giving up zero runs.
USD's three runs in the sixth came from an RBI single from freshman Tora Otsuka; a sacrifice fly by Jay Schuyler, and an RBI single from Brhet Bewley. In the 7th inning, Shane McGuire scored from third on a wild pitch and Paul Kunst provided an RBI sacrifice fly to center. Offensively Bewley was the lone Torero to get two hits. Arizona starter Avery Weems took the loss after pitching six innings and scattering three hits and allowing four runs.
The Toreros have won six straight and are scheduled to host KC Wiz on Tuesday, February 27th, in an exhibition game (6:00 p.m.), followed by four games with Indiana over March 2-4.
