Moraga, Calif. - San Diego was undone by the Gaels' defense on Saturday afternoon, falling, 66-57.
Despite a 19-9 run in the fourth quarter, the Toreros were unable close out the comeback.
Aubrey Ward-El had a team-high 15 points with teammate Alexandria Young also scoring in double digits (10). Maya Hood grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and leads the Toreros with 154 on the season.
The Gaels had a strong start, scoring six points after five quick Torero fouls. Sydney Williams ignited USD's offense with a jump shot two minutes in to the first quarter.
Saint Mary's opened the game on an 8-2 run before the Toreros cut into the deficit with three points from Ward-El. This began a 7-0 run for USD that reduced its deficit to five points.
Hood started the second quarter with two steals to kick-start the Toreros and move them within three points of the Gaels with three minutes left. However, San Diego finished the second quarter down, 33-27.
Caroline Buhr was the first to score in the third quarter. However, Saint Mary's freshman Madeline Holland converted two 3-pointers, giving the Gaels a double digit lead 41-31. The Toreros could not break through the Gaels' defense, as Saint Mary's tallied five steals and nine blocked shots, to extend their lead, 57-40, at the end of the third quarter.
Young had the first Torero points of the fourth quarter after a steal and drilling to the net for a layup. This started a 19-9 fourth quarter run, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback and the Gaels scored a, 66-57, victory.
USD (12-11, 5-7) struggled with fouling, totaling 24 personal fouls throughout regulation play.
The Toreros will look to bounce back at home Thursday at 6 p.m. when they play host to Pepperdine.
