TUCSON, Ariz. - Sara Silveyra went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead San Diego to a 7-4 victory against Wisconsin on Sunday to conclude play at the Wildcat Invitational.
Silveyra opened the game's scoring with an RBI-single in the first inning and provided the finishing blow with a two-RBI single in the seventh.
The Toreros (14-13) won their third straight game and wrapped up the weekend with a 3-2 record. Along with its victory against the Badgers (13-11), USD also claimed wins against No. 24/25 USC Upstate and South Dakota.
Hannah Gilliland led the Toreros throughout the weekend, going 5-for-13 (.385) with a team-high five runs, three RBIs, two walks and a home run. Kailey Hill and Katie Vretzos both went 4-for-12 (.333) on the weekend, while Taylor Spence batted .308 (4-for-13).
Hannah Boos (5-2) had an excellent weekend in the circle, going 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA. She held opponents to a .139 batting average and permitted just one run on five hits and three walks in 10 1/3 innings. She got the victory against Wisconsin on Sunday, holding the Badgers scoreless on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.
The Toreros struck early against Wisconsin when Silveyra singled up the middle in the top of the first inning to bring in Spence and give USD a 1-0 lead.
Wisconsin responded with a runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 4-1 lead. That's all the Badgers would get as Boos held them scoreless the remainder of the game.
USD rallied for four runs in the top of the fifth inning to retake the lead, 5-4. Sarah Stone delivered a two-RBI single to left field and Gilliland followed with a two-run homer.
Silveyra provided a pair of insurance runs for the Toreros in the seventh, singling to left field to bring in a pair of runs to extend USD's lead to 7-4.
Boos permitted a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh but forced the next batter to ground into a 1-6-3 double play to end the game.
The Toreros will look to continue their momentum Wednesday when they play host to Farfield at 7 p.m. USD travels to Cal State Bakersfield for a three-game series next weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon PT.
