USD vs SDSU Box Mar 13 
FOWLER PARK â€" The USD baseball team hosted crosstown rival San Diego State this evening before 1,064 fans at Fowler Park. The Toreros were cruising through five innings with a 2-0 lead only to see the visitors score seven runs on just two hits in the 6th inning to take control of the game. Jay Schuyler had a solid night for the Toreros as he went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs.
Nate Kuchta got his first start of the season on a night that saw seven Torero pitchers and fourteen total in the game. Kuchta did not allow a run while notching two strikeouts over his only inning of the game. Freshman Gabriel Ponce kept the shutout intact with two scoreless innings through the third. The Toreros got on the scoreboard first in the bottom on the third when Brhet Bewley singled to left field that plated Tyler Herburger.
Anthony Donatella pitched two scoreless innings through the 5th and the Toreros increased their lead to 2-0 when Schuyler belted an RBI double to left that plated Herburger for his second run of the game. The game went south for the Toreros in the seventh inning when the Aztecs scored seven runs on just two hits while committing three errors. Both teams added a run in the seventh inning with Schuyler coming through again with an RBI single up the middle. SDSU (11-5) added the final run of the game in the 9th.
For USD Bewley went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Donatella took the loss for the Toreros to see his record even up at 1-1. Daniel Ritcheson pitched two innings for the Aztecs and picked up the win to also even his record at 1-1. Jordan Verdon and Dean Nevarez each collected two hits and two RBIs for the Aztecs.
The Toreros return to Fowler Park on Friday with a 6:00 p.m. against Santa Clara that begins a three-game WCC weekend series.
