BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - San Diego split a pair of games against Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon.
The Toreros endured a controversial ending in the first game against the Roadrunners.
Tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, CSU Bakersfield's Paige Johnson hit a line drive to left field with the base loaded. It appeared as though Savannah Shields made the catch but the umpires did not make an out signal and the Roadrunners runner on third went home for the winning run.
It was a disappointing result to the day for the Toreros after getting off to a quick start in the first inning. Taylor Spence reached base to lead off and came home on an RBI-single by Lauren Kane.
That was all the Toreros would get, however, as they had trouble figuring out Roadrunners pitcher Daryn Hitzel who pitched all 8.0 innings and allowed just one run on four hits and two walks.
Halle Kyler went the distance in the circle for the Toreros, holding CSU Bakersfield to two runs - one earned - on three hits and five walks with eight strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings.
Spence and Clare led the Toreros offensively, both going 2-for-3.

USD bounced back with a 3-2 victory in the second game of the day.
Clare and Spence continued their hot days at the plate. Clare went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Spence went 2-for-4 with a run. Madison Casiano also had a nice day, going 2-for-3.
Delaney Heller got the start and held the Roadrunners to two runs on three hits and one walk with a strikeout in 4.1 innings. Hannah Boos came in as relief and finished the game, holding CSU Bakersfield scoreless on four hits and a walk with a strikeout.
The Toreros did most of its offensive damage early, scoring a run in the second inning and two in the third.
With USD holding on to a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Roadrunners loaded the bases with one out. The Toreros turned a double play to get out of the jam, end the inning and secure the victory.
The Toreros will conclude the weekend with one game Sunday at CSU Bakersfield.
