BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Kailey Hill went 4-for-5 with four RBIs to lead San Diego to a 7-5 victory at Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon.
The Toreros (17-14) scored early and weathered a late comeback effort by the Roadrunners (2-19) to earn their second straight victory.
USD finished the weekend series against CSU Bakersfield with a 2-1 record. Lindsay Clare led the Toreros offensively, going 5-for-8 (.625) with an RBI. Taylor Spence hit .545 (6-for-11) with four runs and three stolen bases. Kailey Hill (4-for-12) and Sara Silveyra (3-for-9) both hit .333 on the weekend with four RBIs apiece.
Halle Kyler posted a 0.78 ERA and limited opponents to a .156 batting average with nine strikeouts in 9.0 innings.
Hill, Spence and Silveyra all produced multi-hit performances in the series finale Sunday. Along with Hill's four hits, Spence went 2-for-4 and Silveyra went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Hannah Gilliland also had a nice day at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.
It was a team effort in the circle with all three Toreros pitchers making appearances. Hannah Boos (6-2) got the start and held the Roadrunners to four runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Delaney Heller and Halle Kyler finished the final 2 1/3 innings and permitted just one run on four hits and one walk.
USD jumped out to an early 3-1 lead through the first two innings. The Toreros erupted for four runs in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 7-1 lead.
CSU Bakersfield rallied for a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the sixth to cut USD's lead to 7-5.
That was as close as the Roadrunners would get as Kyler kept the Roadrunners off the board in the seventh to seal the 7-5 victory for the Toreros.
USD will play a three-game series next weekend at UC Riverside, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday.
