RIVERSIDE, Calif. - San Diego took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning but UC Riverside hit a three-run walk-off home run to claim a 6-4 victory in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
Trailing 3-2 after six innings, the Toreros (19-15) rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. However, USD was unable to hold onto the lead to seal the victory in the bottom half of the inning.
With runners on first and third with one out, the Highlanders' (23-11) Hannah Rodriguez hit a three-run homer to left field to walk off the Toreros.
It was a tough way to end the weekend for USD which won a doubleheader Saturday to claim the series win.
Taylor Spence and Shelbi Evans both went 2-for-3 to lead USD offensively. Spence also scored a pair of runs. Lindsay Clare went 1-for-4 and contributed a team-high two RBIs.
The Toreros had plenty of chances offensively but left eight runners stranded on base throughout the game.
Halle Kyler got the start in the circle and permitted two runs on six hits and no walks in 2 2/3 innings. Delaney Heller (7-6) came in as relief and finished the final 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk with one strikeout.
The Toreros jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, then made it 2-1 after two innings. The Highlanders tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning and took a 3-2 lead after five innings.
USD rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. However, UC Riverside hit a three-run homer in the bottom half of the inning to claim a 6-4 win.
The Toreros head to San Diego State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. PT for their only game next week.
