SAN DIEGO - Lindsay Clare homered in the second inning to get San Diego going early as the Toreros cruised to a 4-1 victory against UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday afternoon at the USD Softball Complex.
It was the second victory for USD (21-15) in less than 20 hours after it earned a 4-2 win Tuesday night at San Diego State. Similar to the win against the Aztecs, the Toreros made the most of their opportunities throughout the game.
Five Toreros players registered a hit apiece and four players scored a run each. Clare and Olague provided the power with a home run and a double, respectively.
Halle Kyler got the start in the circle and was excellent through 3 2/3 innings. She kept the Gauchos (13-20) scoreless on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
Delaney Heller (8-6) entered as relief in the fourth inning and finished the game to earn her eighth victory of the year. She permitted one unearned run on two hits and two walks with a strikeout in 3 1/3 innings.
Clare hit her second home run of the season in the second inning to give the Toreros an early 1-0 lead. The Toreros capitalized on a pair of UCSB errors in the third inning to extend its advantage to 3-0.
The defensive play of the game came in the top of the fourth inning. The Gauchos' Alyssa Lazatin singled to left field with runners on first and second. Toreros left fielder, Savannah Shields, gathered the hit then fired a perfect throw home to catch the UCSB runner from second trying to score.
Another error by the Gauchos allowed a fourth Torero run to score in the bottom of the fourth inning.
UCSB got a run back in the top of the fifth inning when Alyssa Diaz singled to center field and cut the Toreros lead to 4-1. That was all the Gauchos would get, however, as Heller retired six of the next eight batters to seal the victory for the Toreros.
USD will look to continue its momentum next week when it plays host to UNLV on Tuesday at 2 p.m. PT and begins WCC play on Saturday at noon against Saint Mary's.
