SAN DIEGO - Kailey Hill went 2-for-4 with three RBIs but San Diego was undone by a pair of errors in the sixth inning as the Toreros fell to UNLV, 6-4, on Tuesday afternoon at the USD Softball Complex.
USD (21-16) had a tough day defensively, committing four errors throughout the contest. The final two proved the most costly, contributing to a two-run sixth inning for the Rebels (21-13) that gave them a 5-4 lead they would not relinquish.
The Toreros did all of their offensive damage in the third inning. Trailing 1-0, USD loaded the bases and Hill stepped to the plate with one out. She launched a bases-clearing double to the right-center field gap to give USD a 3-1 lead.
The Toreros capitalized on a UNLV error later in the inning to add a fourth run.
That was all USD would get, however, as they had trouble figuring out the Rebels relief pitcher Janine Petmecky who finished the final 4.0 innings and held the Toreros scoreless on three hits and two walks.
It was a team effort in the circle for the Toreros with all three of their pitchers contributing at least 1 2/3 innings of work. Halle Kyler got the start and limited the Rebels to one run on two hits and two walks in 2 1/3 innings.
Hannah Boos (8-3) took the loss, despite only giving up one earned run on three hits and no walks.
Madison Casiano also had a nice day offensively for the Toreros, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
The Toreros begin West Coast Conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader against Saint Mary's beginning at noon PT.
