USD vs UCI Box April 3

FOWLER PARK -- The USD Toreros dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to the visiting UC Irvine Anteaters. UCI's Matt Reitano hit a home run in the top of the 11th for the game-winner. The visitor's took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and that score held until Jay Schuyler unloaded his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the 8th inning to knot the score at 1-all.

All told each team used six pitchers in a low scoring midweek contest. USD's Anthony Donatella (1-2) took the loss as he closed out the final 1 2/3 innings for the Toreros. Evan McMillin (1-1) picked up the victory as he pitched 2.0 innings and allowed just one hit. UCI improved to 15-12 on the season.

In the bottom of the 5th Kevin Collard singled and reached second on a wild pitch. With two outs Paul Kunst reached on a throwing error but Collard was thrown out at home by the Anteater first baseman to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 9th inning the Toreros had bases loaded with two outs but the inning ended with a fly out to center by Paul Kunst. UCI leadoff hitter Cole Kreuter went 3-for-5 with one run scored. Reitano finished 2-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI.

For the Toreros (13-16), Jay Schuyler finished 2-for-5 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI. DH Kevin Collard also contributed two hits in four at-bats.

USD welcomes the LMU Lions on Friday with a 6:00 p.m. contest to begin a three-game series.
