FOWLER PARK â€" The Torero baseball bats came alive tonight with the team totaling a season-high 18 hits, including six doubles. USD also set a new high for total bases (24), and tied the season marks for runs (11) and doubles. USD's top three hitters combined to go 10-for-14 with eight runs and five RBIs.

The Toreros scored three runs in the 1st and 2nd innings in jumping out to a 6-0 lead. In the first the Toreros banged out five hits with Shane McGuire and Jeff Houghtby each knocking doubles. In the 2nd inning Jay Schuyler had the key hit with a two-run double that scored McGuire and Tora Otsuka. USD starter LHP Chris Murphy had four strikeouts through the first two innings before the Lions scored three runs in the 3rd inning to get within 6-3.

In the 3rd inning and with two outs the Toreros strung together three straight singles. McGuire knocked in Tora Otsuka to make it 7-3. Schuyler added his second double to right field for his 4th RBI of the game to make it 8-3. Through the first three innings USD's top three hitters combined to go 9-for-9. The Toreros (14-17, 5-6 WCC) added single runs in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings. Starter Chris Murphy (4-2) left the game after five full innings as he gave up five hits and four runs while totaling eight strikeouts.

For the game McGuire reached base five times with four hits and a walk. He belted two doubles, scored three runs and tallied one RBI. Tora Otsuka finished 3-for-5 with three runs and Jay Schuyler went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles and four RBIs. Freshman Gabriel Ponce closed out the game over the final four innings as he limited LMU to just three hits to earn his first save.

LMU (14-16, 7-4 WCC) was paced by Brandon Shearer who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Nick Sogard reached base three times via walks and scored twice for the Lions.

Sunday's series finale is set for 1:00 pm. USD junior LHP Nick Sprengel is scheduled to take the mound for the Toreros.
