SAN DIEGO – A late comeback effort by No. 23 San Diego came up short as the Toreros fell to Oregon State, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

After falling behind, 2-1, the Toreros (3-6) stormed back in the fourth set (25-18) to send the match to a deciding fifth set. The Beavers (9-2) took a commanding 9-3 lead to start the fifth but USD would not go down easily and eventually closed the deficit to, 13-12.

The effort was too little, too late, as Oregon State's Amy Underdown and Maddie Goings delivered back-to-back kills to secure the fifth set, 15-12, and claim the victory.

Four Toreros reached double-digits in kills with
Roxie Wiblin leading the way with 18.
Lauren Fuller added 15, followed by
Addie Picha (11) and
Katie Lukes (10). The Toreros had a tough night offensively overall with the Beavers racking up 22 blocks.

Anna Newsome helped coordinate a majority of the attack with 44 assists.

Kelli Barry continued to impress defensively and logged a team-high 23 digs. Picha registered a team-best seven blocks.

Wiblin and Fuller were named to the SDSU/USD Challenge All-Tournament team for their standout play in three matches. Wiblin led the Toreros with 35 kills (3.18 per set) on the weekend and was second on the team with 31 digs. Fuller was second on the team with 20 kills and added 15 digs, six blocks and three service aces.

The Toreros started well and secured the first set, 25-21. The Beavers stepped up their defense in the second and recorded seven blocks. The increased defense helped Oregon State seal a 25-19 decision and level the match at, 1-1.

The Beavers continued their momentum in the third with a 25-18 result to take a 2-1 advantage. USD forced a fifth set by battling to a 25-18 fourth-set victory.

After facing an early deficit in the fifth, the Toreros cut the Beavers advantage to 13-12. However, Oregon State scored the next two points to win, 15-12, and claim the 3-2 victory.

San Diego will look to bounce back as conference play begins at home against Saint Mary's on Thursday at 7 p.m. PT.
