SAN DIEGO – Addie Picha registered nine kills and 10 blocks to help lead San Diego to its first shutout victory of the season, defeating Tennessee, 3-0, Friday night in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Toreros (2-3) started hot and never let up against the Lady Vols (6-2).
Kaity Edwards hit .750 on the night, racking up a team-high 10 kills on 12 attacks. Edwards led a balanced USD offense that featured eight players with at least two kills apiece.

Anna Newsome dished out a match-high 20 assists and
Laura Madill added 12 to keep the offense clicking.

The Toreros were excellent defensively. Along with Picha's 10 blocks,
Hannah Patrick contributed three, while
Roxie Wiblin and
Lauren Fuller added two apiece.
Kelli Barry paced the Toreros with eight digs.
USD jumped out to an early 6-2 lead before stretching it to 10-3, and never trailed in the first set. The Toreros held at least a five point advantage for the remainder of the set and won, 25-19.

The Toreros continued their momentum in the second set, taking a quick 7-3 lead. USD was in control for a majority of the second but five service errors allowed the Lady Vols to stay within striking distance.

Tennessee eventually cut its deficit to 20-19 but the Toreros secured five of the next seven points to seal the set, 25-21, and give USD a 2-0 advantage.

The Lady Vols would not go down easy in the third, however, and seemed to find their rhythm early. After the Toreros took a 5-2 lead, the Lady Vols reeled off four straight points to take a 6-5 lead.

Patrick halted the rally with a kill but the Lady Vols won three of the next four points to stretch its lead to, 9-7. Trailing 11-8, the Toreros went on a 6-1 run to retake the lead, 14-12, and would not relinquish the advantage the remainder of the match.

USD sealed the three-set victory with five straight points to win the third, 25-18.
