Not the Toreros Night

San Diego fell to Pepperdine, 3-0, for its first conference loss of the season

MALIBU, Calif.—No. 22 San Diego suffered its first conference loss of the season to Pepperdine, 3-0, on Thursday evening at Firestone Fieldhouse.

The loss snapped USD's (15-5, 8-1 WCC) 13-match winning streak and marked the first time the Toreros were swept this season (19-25, 25-27, 22-25).

Tough serving by the Waves (11-9, 7-2 WCC) kept the Toreros out of system most of the night, however USD still managed to hit at a .279 clip. Pepperdine collected eight aces in the contest, including one on match point, compared to just two from San Diego.

Thana Fayad recorded her seventh double-double, hitting .292 for a match-high 12 kills and added 10 digs. Grace Frohling was effective from the right side, hitting .438 with eight kills on 16 swings with just one error.

Roxie Wiblin and Katie Lukes added seven and six kills respectively, while Megan Jacobsen and Lauren Turner both chipped in five.

Anna Newsome and Laura Madill split setter duties in the 6-2 offense with Newsome collecting 23 assists and Madill adding 16. Newsome also registered both of San Diego's aces in the match.

San Diego struggled to defend at the net, collecting its lowest block total of the season with 2.0. Lukes registered the only solo effort for the Toreros, while Fayad and Turner tallied a block assist. Annie Benbow collected a team-high 13 digs and Payton Douglass added seven.

The teams remained close early in set one before a 9-1 run, including four aces by Rachel Ahrens, gave the Waves a commanding lead at 20-13. In total, Pepperdine collected five of its eight aces in the first set.

USD's offense began to find its rhythm in the second frame, hitting at a .361 clip. Wiblin, Fayad and Frohling led the attack for the Toreros, who built up a 15-11 lead at the midpoint. Pepperdine then rallied to tie the set at 20-20 and pulled ahead to reach set-point 24-22. USD then rattled off three straight points to earn its first set point, 25-24, however a kill and back-to-back blocks gave the Waves the set and the 2-0 lead.

Pepperdine continued to apply pressure at the service line, collecting three more aces in the third set. The Waves built their largest lead at 17-12 with another Aherns ace. The Toreros chipped away at the lead, finishing on a 4-0 run to pull within one, 21-22. However, the Waves did not falter, closing out the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.

The Toreros will look to bounce back when they travel to face Loyola Marymount on Saturday at 12 p.m. PT.
