Toreros Sweep for 10th Conference Win

San Diego defeated Pacific 3-0 for its 12th sweep of the season

SAN DIEGO—San Diego earned its 12th sweep of the season, defeating Pacific 25-18, 25-17, 25-16 on Thursday night in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
 
The Toreros (17-5, 10-1 WCC) hit .391 as a team, led by Megan Jacobsen who had a match high 10 kills on 14 errorless swings to finish at a blazing .714 clip. Katie Lukes added nine kills, hitting .421 and Grace Frohling and Lauren Turner chipped in six kills each.
 
USD kept the Tigers (12-11, 4-7 WCC) out of system all night, collecting eight aces from the service line. Frohling registered a career-high five aces in the match, including three in-a-row early in the third set. Anna Newsome (2) and Camryn Tastad (1) also registered aces for the Toreros.
 
Newsome collected 34 assists and was second on the team with six digs. Annie Benbow and Turner led USD defensively with Benbow tallying a match-high 11 digs. Turner collected seven blocks and Thana Fayad added four.
 
After falling behind, 4-7, in the first set, the Toreros battled back to tie the set 11-11 on a Frohling ace. With the set knotted at 16-all, USD went on a 9-2 run to close out the set handily 25-18. The Toreros hit .387 behind five kills from Jacobsen and four from Lukes to open the match.
 
San Diego led the second set from start to finish, using a balanced attack from Frohling, Fayad, Lukes and Turner. Turner also collected three of her seven blocks in the set and the Toreros went up 2-0 in the match.
 
The Toreros went on an early run to start the third set, with Frohling collecting three consecutive aces to put USD up 8-2. The Tigers battled within three at 17-14 but San Diego could not be stopped, closing on a 5-point run to take the set and sweep the match.
 
The Toreros remain home this weekend to face Saint Mary's on Saturday at 12 p.m. PT.
