Must-Win for the Toreros

San Diego aiming for an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament

SAN DIEGO – With a win needed to remain in the hunt for an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, San Diego men's soccer plays at Santa Clara in its season finale on Saturday at 7 p.m.
 
The Toreros (11-5-1, 2-4 WCC), who are receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, are looking to earn one of the 24 at-large bids into the 48-team field of the NCAA Tournament. USD rallied to beat Portland last week at home and remain in contention after four straight losses.
 
Santa Clara, meanwhile, is No. 109 in the latest RPI rankings and sits in a tie for fifth in the WCC standings with seven points. The Broncos, who are one point ahead of the Toreros in the conference standings, have not won since October 30 at home against San Francisco, going 0-1-1 in their last two games.

IV - SERIES HISTORY VS. SANTA CLARA
USD trails in the all-time series against Santa Clara, 14-34-4. San Diego has not won in the last two meetings (0-1-1) and its last win over the Broncos was in November 2016 in San Diego (W, 3-2). In the last the meeting, the two sides battled to a 1-1 draw after both goals were scored in the first 18 minutes of the game. The Toreros have not won at Santa Clara since October 2014, going 0-1-1 in the two road matchups since the 2-1 win.

The Toreros enter the final weekend of regular season play sitting in at No. 50 in the NCAA's RPI rankings while Santa Clara is No. 109. USD is aiming to get an at-large bid in the 48-team NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship, which consists of 24 at-large bids and 24 automatic. Teams will learn their postseason fate with the selection show on Monday, November 18 (10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET). First round games are on Thursday, November 21. USD has made the NCAA Tournament 14 times in program history, but the last time was 2014.

USD's 11 wins this year are its most since 2014 when it went 11-6-4 (6-1-0). The Toreros have reached double-digit wins three times in the last seven years and 24 times in 40 seasons of program history. The last time they had more than 11 wins was in 2012 (14-9-0).

This year's 36 goals are the most for the Toreros in a season since 2012 when they had 37. USD, meanwhile, has a goal in 16 of its 17 games this season, including four goals in four games and three or more goals seven times. The last time USD scored 4+ goals in four or more games was in 2006. The Toreros are also second in the WCC and 27th in the country in goals.
 
VIII – BERRY THE GOAL-SCORER
A primary contributor of those 36 team goals is senior Miguel Berry. The forward has 16, which are the most by a Torero in 19 years (2000: Ryan Coiner, 17) and tied for the third-most in program history. Berry has a goal in three straight games and four total over the stretch.

IX – ALL-AMERICAN CANDIDATE
With a season for the record books, Miguel Berry has put his name into the conversation as one of the best players in the country. In Division I, the forward is first in points (39), third in goals (16), third in points per game (2.29), and fifth in goals per game (0.94). He is tops in the WCC in all four of those offensive categories.

Although Berry has scored 16 of the 36 goals, 11 different Toreros have registered at least one goal this year. Seven Toreros have multiple goals, including Alex Churness with four and Freddy Polzer with three. In points, 15 Toreros have at least one.
