Eighth Inning Clinches Victory Over Aztecs

San Diego scored four runs in the eighth to take down SDSU, 4-2

SAN DIEGO—A breakout eighth inning helped San Diego to a 4-2 win over city rival San Diego State on Tuesday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The Toreros (6-3) and Aztecs (5-3) remained scoreless for seven innings before USD came alive scoring all four of their runs in the top of the eighth. SDSU got two back in the bottom of the inning but the Toreros held on to claim the victory over their crosstown foes.

Jeff Houghtby led off the top of the eighth with a single to right and scored on an Adam Lopez RBI double to left field. Lopez would later advance on a fielder's choice and a wild throw to make it a 2-0 Torero lead.

Tora Otsuka scored after a balk by SDSU and Shane McGuire scored on the second error of the inning from the Aztecs to take a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth the Aztecs loaded the bases after two batters were hit by pitches and a walk brought the tying run to the plate. The Torero bullpen walked in two runs, but was able to get out of the inning with the lead intact and hold on for the victory.

Louie Crow got the start for the Toreros—his first of the season—throwing 2.0 shutout innings and giving up two hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Anthony Donatella came on in relief of Crow, pitching 3.0 innings with two hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

In total, the Toreros allowed only four hits and held the Aztecs scoreless through seven innings. The Toreros finished the day with five hits and four runners left on base. Lopez was 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

The Toreros return home to Fowler Park this weekend for a three-game series with St. John's beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
